52nd show!! This is it! We did it! I can’t thank you all enough for reading and inviting me to shows this year. For the record, I’m not stopping anytime soon!
This was the first night of 13 shows Phish is playing at MSG. Dubbed the Bakers Dozen, this run has donut themes throughout and the vibe is electric! MSG in the summer? Still great. Some hate on MSG for whatever reason but I’ve always loved it. The downside is there is no real shakedown/ parking lot scene. The upside is NYC energy and the band loves playing here. It is great to see them without looking for a place to stash a huge coat.
It was so amazing reconnecting with the crowd! Not the mass of every one per se but the extended family of friends I know in this scene. I got there early enough to be one of the first three to try the new limited edition Ben and Jerry flavor Freezer Reprise. What a nice thing they’re doing. All proceeds go the Phish’s charity the Waterwheel Foundation. Free samples were distributed in front of MSG. We also learned the band was giving free donuts each night. Tonight’s flavor was coconut! More donut art covered the foyer to the garden and the surrounding pillars
13 shows in 17 days! People have been speculating about special sets, themed sets, chronologically organized sets, etc. the donuts seem to be a theme enough. The music was great but felt like a regular Phish set till an acapella version of Lime in the Coconut to end the show. Perfect for tonight’s flavor. One other element, connected to the ice cream, in fact, was the inclusion of Tweezer. A popular and common enough song. At the end of the show (sometimes not till the encore) they play a reprise of the theme to close the gap. They did not play the reprise tonight so the speculation machine started back up with expectations of a reprise at the end of night 13. That works for me.
Of the 13 shows, I have six floor tickets. Tonight I was in 117 but that just means I head to the Skybridge. Section 300 doesn’t sound like an improvement till you’re there. Lots of room to dance, great view of the scene and did I mention lots of room to dance? If I don’t have floor tickets I will gladly buy section 300 now.
It was a Friday night show but I chose to pace myself. 13 shows in 17 days and I’m not getting younger. After parties? Tempting but I left right after for sleep. Sharing the train home with friends and phans is always interesting. The train station was packed with fans leaving Iron Maiden at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. I had a chance to talk set lists with them. Seems everyone had an amazing night in the city!
